In the latest episode of Game of Thrones Bran Stark’s companion Hodor, have one of the most dramatic character twists we’ve ever seen. Since the series started we have always seen Wylis (Hodor) speaking just one word and that’s Hodor (except for the recent Winterfell vision where we saw the young Wylis having the ability to speak properly).
The episode was titled The Door and that was the greatest clue about the origin of Hodor. In a tragic climax, we got to see how Hodor got his name and also his death. During a vision, the White Walkers attacked the location where Bran and others were staying and Bran had to warg into Hodor from the vision to help them escape the White Walkers. All this happened while Bran was in front of Wylis in the vision and this somehow connected the minds of the past and present Hodor and the young Hodor could only hear Meera Reed screaming, “Hold the door,” which he kept repeating till it turned into Hodor and that’s how Hodor was born.
Kristian Nairn spoke with EW about his tragic death and the origin of Hodor.
“I love it. Funnily enough, I just saw [the scene] today for the first time. I couldn’t be happier how he has gone out. The interesting thing is it’s kinda left open. You don’t actually see him [die]. It’s implied. So who knows? He may come back as a White Walker, maybe he got away. But it’s a really good way to do it. I couldn’t have asked for a better goodbye to a character I love. My favorite part is it ties up the question of why is Hodor “Hodor.” Why does he say the word “Hodor”? Only George R.R. Martin or David and Dan could have come up with this. It’s incredibly sad. The minute you finally learn something about Hodor, they kill him!”
