The incredible season finale of Game of Thrones saw the battle for control of Westeros swing decisively in Cersei Lannister’s favour, with the vengeful Queen Mother destroying almost all of her opponents in one fell swoop after setting the Sept of Baelor alight. So far, so good, right? Unfortunately for Cersei, what she doesn’t know is that rival claimant Daenerys Targaryen is on her way to steal her crown alongside estranged brother Tyrion – and she’s bringing her dragons with her. So, now that the show’s on hiatus for another year, what can we expect to see when Dany finally steps ashore? Actress Emilia Clarke recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her character’s chances of wresting power from Cersei when Season 7 premieres, and she’s confident to say the least.
Declaring that since marrying Dothraki chief Khal Drogo back in the show’s first season, Daenery’s sole ambition has been “to get back to Westeros”, Clarke doesn’t seem to think that Cersei poses much of a threat to Daenerys’ bid to take the Iron Throne. Talking about her character’s forthcoming invasion, the actress said: “She’s got the dragons. She’s got the manpower. She’s got the ships thanks to the Iron Born. So there’s nothing else to do. She’s got to go now. Iron Throne! She’s got the balls. And she also knows she’s got to go forward to help Meereen. She’s got to sit on the Iron Throne for the ripple effect. She knows she can do rule better than anybody else.” We’d be hard pressed to argue that point – Daenerys, Tyrion and (hopefully) Jorah? The triumvirate of dreams by anyone’s standards.
Asked whether Cersei even stands a chance against Daenerys and her fleet, Clarke didn’t mince her words: “If we talk about this: basically, I’ve got ships, I’ve got manpower, I’ve got dragons that breathe fire, and I apparently cannot be killed. I don’t even have an attractive man who wants to take his shirt off anywhere near me now, so there are no distractions… The only thing missing is Jorah. He’s gotta come back. I said I can’t rule the Seven Kingdoms without him.” Uh-oh. Looks like Cersei’s time on the Iron Throne might be over just as it’s beginning – even actress Lena Headey admitted that she predicts a short reign for her character in season 7 of Game of Thrones.
